To the north of the province of Alicante, in the evocative Vall de Laguar, we find the Barranc de l’Infern (Hell's Ravine), also known as The Cathedral of Hiking.
Barranc de l’Infern is the greatest challenge in the province of Alicante. Its whitish limestone rock and its impressive deep gorge make its descent a real challenge for any adventurer.
Barranco de l´Infern is one of the most unique hiking routes in Alicante, possibly due to its more than 6,800 stone steps, earning it the nickname "The Cathedral of Hiking."
The hiking route runs entirely along the path that surrounds the fantastic Barranc de l´Infern, of very high geological and botanical value, using the peculiar and characteristic horseshoe paths with steps that zigzag to overcome the great height differences separating Fleix and Benimaurell.
After parking the car in Fleix, we start the hiking route by following the road towards Benimaurell, soon finding the detour towards the Font Grossa and the Fleix washhouse, the starting point of the route.
We begin the ascent on the opposite slope of the ravine to reach the head of Barranc del Salt, several tens of meters high. After passing through El Forat (a hole carved in the rock), we come across the legendary Moorish stairs.
We cross the ravine and climb up to les Juvees d’Enmig, where we can cool off at Pou de la Juvea. We continue to Font de Reinós and the climbing area of Barranc de l’Infern at Les Juvees de Dalt.
We start the descent to Barranc dels Racons and then climb back up to Font dels Olbis, and then descend again, this time to the village of Fleix, the end of the route.
If it's winter, bring a raincoat or windbreaker and warm clothing. If it's hot, it's best to bring a cap and sunscreen.
It is also advisable to wear hiking shoes or boots, comfortable clothing, and a backpack for carrying water.
